I find it amazing that in America, a country that has been defining capitalism for the last century, a concept of social security even exists! Amongst all the hoopla around the issue, I wonder why no one is asking the question - should social security even exist? When there is so much focus on individualism (especially when money is concerned - 401Ks, IRAs etc), why should Uncle Sam help the average American plan for retirement? Social Security is an outdated concept of a bygone society with a different value system. In view of today's cut-throat and self-focused society, the government should drop socialist plans like social security and leave it up to the individuals to decide how they want to shape their future and retirement.
